Bay of Plenty Respite Care

Bay of Plenty Crisis and Planned Respite
Established in 2006, this service provides Crisis and Planned Respite Foster Care for children and young people at risk of an admission to an inpatient mental health acute unit.

Aim
The services provided under this programme aim to reduce the emotional harm caused by inpatient admissions, increase recovery from acute episodes of mental health, and support the natural families of young people to ensure family preservation.

The Service
As part of the service, Youth Horizons works with the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Team (CAMHS) to provide respite care for young people and their families who are under the care of CAMHS and experiencing symptoms of mental illness. The service provides flexible care through the provision of tiered services ranging from in-home support while the child/ young person is still in the natural family home through to respite care in the home of the caregiver, where they are supervised 24 hours, 7 days a week. Using a team of two clinicians, the service recruits, trains and supervises caregivers and provides on-call guidance and support, 24 hours a day.

Participants
Referrals are received from the Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)
